If suffering made people quit, the world wouldn’t have alcoholism.

We’ve all heard people say it: “They just haven’t hit their rock bottom yet.”

The idea that someone needs to experience more pain, more devastation, one more disaster before they finally wake up?  It’s a convenient phrase, but it’s completely wrong—and incredibly dangerous.

That thinking doesn’t save lives. It takes them.  

Rock Bottom is a Dangerous Myth

Hoping for someone to experience (another) catastrophic event before getting sober is like watching a person speed toward a cliff and saying:

“Maybe they need to go over the edge to realize they should have turned around.”

Don't fool yourself.  That’s not tough love.  That’s deliberate neglect.

And for those still drinking, the rock-bottom myth becomes an excuse to keep going:

“Maybe I haven’t had enough pain yet.”

It gives them a free pass, to continue piling up damage, taking changes, and bypass consequence after consequence saying “That wasn’t the one.  Not yet.”  

Here’s the truth: there is no magical consequence waiting out there for you, that can help you change.    The question isn’t whether the next consequence will be a mythical one, that’s so bad you’ll just have to stop —the question is, how much more are you willing to lose?

The Reality of Consequences and Change

Sadly, we see people experience tragedy—taking another life while driving drunk, serving a prison sentence for manslaughter, living with the weight of irreversible guilt—yet still continue drinking. The worst already happened, but it didn’t “wake them up.” 

And then we see the opposite - people who never experience tragic consequences, and yet have a dramatic life changing moment. They quit drinking and never looked back. No catastrophe. No jail. No lost career. No ruined marriage. Just a decision: I’ve had enough.  I’m done.

I know people who closely fit those examples, and I bet you do too.  If terrible consequences determined who would get sober and who wouldn’t, then those two stories wouldn’t exist. But they do.   And that proves one thing: it’s never the amount or severity of consequences that causes change—it’s how a person chooses to use their experiences.

Use What You Know

If you’re questioning life with alcohol, your experiences hold the answers. Instead of waiting for the mythical rock bottom crisis reflect on what has already unfolded:

• How has alcohol affected your decisions and well-being?

• What have you compromised or lost because of it?

• What patterns keep repeating?

Your experiences are rich with insights, offering everything you need to put your life on a better path.  Change doesn’t live in some future consequence—it’s right here waiting for you to see it clearly, from what you've already experienced. 

When You Say “Enough” 

The moment of change happens when you decide:

• I refuse to let this take anything else from me.

• I don’t need more catastrophes to prove this is harming my life.

• I already know enough. I choose to act now.

You’re ready the moment you say you are.  And that moment can be right now.  Acknowledge you’ve already had your rock bottom, because we all have.
