What If Everyone Is "Alcoholic"— What?!!

Have you ever thought, “I’m not an alcoholic, because ..."  

Or maybe you could identify with the spirit of the term but cringed at the baggage and stigma that come with it?  

Or maybe you've heard someone else say, “I don’t need help—I’m not like them”?

Here’s the truth: most people avoid addressing what alcohol is doing in their lives because of that one word: alcoholic.  Labels like ‘alcoholic’ were meant to draw attention to a serious problem. But instead, they’ve become a barrier—separating ‘us’ from ‘them,’ keeping people stuck in shame, or stopping some from seeking change altogether.

It feels like a judgment, a personal failing, a scarlet letter.  Has anyone else ever felt that?  I know I have.  

Today, we want to remove that obstacle once and for all.  What if I told you that not only are you not alone but that everyone—yes, everyone—is alcoholic?   

Sounds like a bold claim, right?

Alcoholism Is Biology

We’ve been taught to define alcoholism with “big” consequences—health, DUIs, lost jobs, ruined relationships. "Tell me about your consequences, and I'll be able to tell you if you're alcoholic."  

Or that it’s about physical dependency.  "Tell me about how much you drink, and I'll be able to tell you if you're alcoholic."

But there are problems with both of these definitions.  Consequences are variable.  And dependency is subjective.

Alcoholism has nothing to do with consequences and everything to do with what alcohol does to your brain, when you drink it.  Think about that for a moment.  

Here’s what happens every time you drink:

• Alcohol suppresses glutamate, slowing your brain activity.

• It increases GABA, relaxing you and lowering your inhibitions.

• It floods your brain with dopamine, hijacking your reward system and creating a cycle of craving more.

This happens to everyone with each drink. And every time we drink, alcohol rewires our brains, carving deeper pathways that make us want more. It’s not a matter of choice—it’s a matter of biology.  Your brain isn’t failing you; it’s doing exactly what alcohol is designed to make it do.

What Makes Someone “Alcoholic”?

“Alcoholic” isn’t about how much you drink or the visible consequences. It’s about whether alcohol changes your brain, creating a cycle of craving and dependency. By that standard, anyone who drinks alcohol is on this spectrum of being "alcoholic."

The only difference between someone with  consequences and someone without them is time and exposure ("enough" and "yet").     

The brain’s response to alcohol is universal: it changes, it adapts, and it craves more. These effects aren’t unique to a select few—they happen to everyone who drinks. So, what does the label ‘alcoholic’ really mean, now that we know it can apply to everyone?

It’s a liberating realization: alcoholism isn’t a personal failing or a moral judgment. It isn't an "us" and "them" separation. It’s the inevitable result of alcohol’s interaction with the brain over time.

Everyone who drinks alcohol, and experiences changes in their brain chemistry, is an alcoholic—it’s just a matter of degrees.

Let Go of the Label - Take Hold of Your Future

I hope you now see that the label 'alcoholic' isn't nearly as special, or stigmatizing as it once was.  It can apply to everyone.  

So, if you ever had any hesitation, or felt weighed down by that term - step past the label, and claim the life you want.

If alcohol is impacting your life negatively - and with enough exposure, that's the result for all of us - then you are ready to see alcohol for what it is.  

It takes healthy brains, and creates a cycle of compromise and dependency.  

Move past the label, and claim the life you want.
