“Would you like a drink?”

For some of us, just the thought of that question can send anxiety soaring.

Today, you’ll understand why that happens.  

And more importantly, you’ll have the best answer to the question we all get asked.

There’s one line that ends the awkwardness—and puts you back in command.

Why Not?

You’re at a party, a work event, or a friend’s dinner table. You don’t drink anymore (weeks, months, years).

 Someone casually offers you a drink. 

“No thanks.”

But at that moment, the tension and anxiety rise.  Not because you’re unsure about your decision.  But because you fear what’s next and you’re not sure what to say.

Maybe they ask it outright.  Maybe it’s just implied. But it’s there.

“Why not?” —the explanation you feel that is due.

Most Answers Feel Wrong

Your mind is racing for something simple. Respectful. Complete.  But most importantly, something that won’t invite more questions.

You scan through the usual list:

• “I’m driving.” (Temporary. Avoidant.)

• “Just taking a break.” (Vague deflection.)

• “I’m on medication.” (Personal—maybe not even true.)

• “I’m sober now.” (Too much. Highlights backstory.)

You say them at times, but none of them ever feel quite right.  Why?

Because they all carry the same negative subtext:

“I can’t drink.” (because … I’m driving, on medication, I’m sober, etc.)

And even if it’s subtle, that one message—“I can’t”—confuses your brain.  You’re apologizing.   

It undermines your choice—even if you know it’s the right one.

What if there were one response that flipped that entire dynamic?  

There is. And it’s this.

“I Feel Better Without It”

The one response that does it all, and more. 

• It’s honest. You’re stating the truth, clearly expressed.

• It’s complete. There’s nothing else to say, unless you want to.

• It’s confident. You’re affirming what you chose, not declining.

• It’s about you. Not a statement about others—just about yourself.

Unlike every other answer, this one sends the message:

“I’m not avoiding something. I’ve chosen something better.”

You’ve stepped out of the old frame—drinking is normal, not drinking needs explaining—into a new one: not drinking is better.

And it changes the entire energy of the moment.

Leading Positively

Most responses feel evasive, heavy or negative, but this one communicates experience, clarity and positivity.

 It subtly says:

“I’ve tried it. I’ve lived it. And I’ve found something better.”

And no one is going to argue with that.

More than just closing the conversation, it often opens the right one.  

You might get asked, “Really? How so?”

Now this is where things get interesting. You get to share your experience - Clarity. Energy. Mental sharpness. Peace of mind. No regrets.

Whatever feels right to you.

You’re leading, not retreating.  And that’s fun.

It Makes You Stronger

Every time you give a half-truth or excuse “I can’t”, your brain receives the message that "I'm missing out." It creates internal conflict.  

But when you say “I feel better without it,” your brain gets a very different message: I’m not missing anything. I’ve gained something.

Your brain hears the message, stores it, and processes it.

Hearing “Better!” creates magic in your mind. You feel good about your choice, and it strengthens your commitment.

It’s an answer you’re proud to give, and you may even find yourself looking forward to the question.

The Only Reply You’ll Ever Need

Next time someone offers you a drink, look them in the eye. Smile. Say warmly:

“No thanks.  I feel better without it.”

No tension. No hesitation. No doubt.

You’ll both notice a subtle shift in energy.

A quiet power will flow from you.  

You’ll be amazed at what happens next.
